On Wednesday a court in Shenzhen, China tried 25 people for smuggling electronics into China.?
?
The smugglers were part of five trafficking rings that brought an estimated $80 million dollars worth of products from Hong Kong.
?
They sold iPhones, iPads, and other electronics through online store Lanyou Shuma.com.
?
While the same electronics are sold in the mainland, Chinese tariffs and luxury taxes hike up the price. Smugglers buy the electronics in Hong Kong then make a profit selling them below market price in China.
?
Many of those tried are said to be middlemen; some are housewives trying to make a little extra income.
?
Border authorities caught over 104 suspects in April, but only 25 were tried on Wednesday.
