Ashley Judd getting a divorce. Does that make a Senate run more likely?

Ashley Judd, an-eighth generation Kentucky native, has lived in Tennessee and Scotland with her husband. Some Kentucky Democrats would like to see Ms. Judd take on Mitch McConnell in 2014.

Actress Ashley Judd and her husband, race car driver Mario Franchitti, are getting divorced after 11 years of marriage. We?re sure this is sad for both of them, but we?re going to jump ahead to the question every bored aide in the Hart Senate Office Building asked themselves Wednesday when they read the news: Does this mean she?s going to run for Senate in Kentucky?

Maybe you didn?t know that was a possibility. But it?s true: Some Kentucky Democrats are talking up Ms. Judd, an eighth-generation Kentucky native, as an ideal candidate to run against Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell in 2014.

Judd was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention this summer and is something of a political activist, so it?s not exactly like this is a wacky idea. Plus she?s been noncommittal in an encouraging kind of way when asked if she?s interested.

?I am incredibly honored and frankly overwhelmed by the outpouring of support ? that the people of Kentucky are interested in having me represent them is the greatest honor of my life so far and I am certainly taking a close look at it,? said Judd before the Kentucky Society of Washington?s Bluegrass Ball in Washington on Jan. 19, according to a report in Politico.

OK, then. Does her impending divorce indicate she?s more likely to do this, or less?

Over at The Atlantic, Michael Catalini thinks it means Judd will take a pass.

?Given this development, there?s a chance Judd won?t want to jump into a messy political campaign,? he writes.

Catalini adds that this is ?bad news? for Senator McConnell, since Judd would be politically weaker than other Democrats he might face. After all, Kentucky is a conservative state, and Judd?s own grandmother called her a ?Hollywood liberal.? Plus, while she was a DNC delegate, she didn?t represent Kentucky. She represented Tennessee ? the state she and Franchitti called home.

U.N.'s Ban says aid response for Syria "very limited"

KUWAIT (Reuters) - The United Nations is receiving only limited support for its aid to millions of Syrians, Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said in published remarks, adding its humanitarian work needed "generous" help from a donor pledging conference on Wednesday.

The gathering in the Gulf Arab state of Kuwait will seek $1 billion of aid for Syria's neighbors sheltering 700,000 registered refugees, and another $500 million to bankroll humanitarian work for 4 million Syrians inside their country.

So far, the United Nations has received pledges covering just 18 percent of the target, unveiled last month as the scale of Syria's humanitarian crisis escalated sharply, and which aims to fund operations for the first half of this year.

Ban was quoted by the official Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) as saying what while the need for humanitarian aid was rising "the level of response the U.N. is receiving is very much limited."

"That is why I am appealing to the whole international community to render their generous support."

Some 4 million Syrians inside the country need food, shelter and other aid and more than 700,000 more have escaped to neighboring countries since the 22-month-old conflict began, according to the U.N.

KUNA reported Ban as saying that on a visit to refugee camps in Jordan and Turkey six weeks ago he heard stories of refugees who had fled Syria "and particularly stories from children, who were very much concerned about their own future."

"That really saddened and humbled me."

Robert Watkins, U.N. humanitarian coordinator in Lebanon, which has seen the biggest influx of refugees from the Syrian bloodshed, told Reuters that the United Nations had received promises of major donations at the Kuwait conference.

"We have every reason to be optimistic that there will a very good presence and new pledges that will be coming up at this conference," he said.

U.S. President Barack Obama announced an additional $155 million, bringing the total U.S. humanitarian aid to the Syrian crisis to some $365 million, the State Department said.

Watkins said the fact that the conference was being held in Kuwait could encourage other wealthy Gulf Arab states, who have led regional opposition to President Bashar al-Assad, to support the international aid effort.

In New York, U.N.-Arab League mediator Lakhdar Brahimi warned the U.N. Security Council on Tuesday that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad may be able to cling to power for now but the country is "breaking up before everyone's eyes," diplomats told Reuters.

Brahimi suggested that attempts to end the 22-month-old conflict, which has claimed more than 60,000 lives according to U.N. figures, had not progressed in the last two months. He said it was up to the Security Council to end its impasse.

Military options for India in Kashmir

India has limited military options in Kashmir. It is very difficult for it to attack 'Pakistani administered Kashmir'. But at the same time Indian defense establishment should not abandon the state till a lasting solution is found for the Kashmir dispute.

Indian government is facing criticism, both internally and externally, for keeping the high presence of troops in the Kashmir Valley. The fact is no matter how suppressive it may appear to some, the presence is required. If Indian troops return to barracks, Pakistan can fuel more insurgency in Kashmir, making the comeback for Indian army more difficult. Another equally important thing is that troops are required all around the state to keep Jammu and Ladakh regions away from militancy. Any increase in militancy in these regions could increase militancy in the valley.

Recently, two Indian soldiers were killed in exchange of fire along the Line-of-Control (LoC) and one of the bodies was mutilated. It created rage all around India. Some argued about attacking Pakistan administered Kashmir. There were similar talks when Ajmal Kasab and his nine associates attacked Mumbai in 2008. The fact is that it never happened.

In order to understand things more closely, one needs to understand as to why the global media does not talk about Kashmir. The prompt reply would come that India is a big market and would be a global Asian power very soon. This is correct. But this is no reason for global media to ignore covering the Kashmir issue. After all, the White House and the State Department do not run American media. Moreover, there is always continuous talk about the Middle East dispute in the Western media even though Israel is America?s strongest ally in the Middle East and is a derivative Western power. India is neither America?s ally nor a Western country in derivative sense.

So what could be the reason? The segmentation! Kashmir would not be discussed in global media or in diplomatic circles overtly for three reasons: India would not overtly aim at Pakistani Kashmir militarily, would support the union of Kashmiri people and would support secretive talks over Kashmir. Such boosts the morale of Indian authorities and may keep others happy. The fact is that the whole of Kashmir territory is considered disputed. In view of that, Pakistani parts of Kashmir; the Northern Areas and 'Azad Kashmir' are disputed too. Even though Pakistan claims to have merged Northern Areas into its Union, India and the US do not recognize it.

Therefore, it becomes easier for India to attack Karachi than to attack Pakistani administered Kashmir. There is something ?disputed? about attacking people whose nationality is not yet decided. True that Pakistan has the military and even administrative control of Pakistani Kashmir and its military and intelligence agencies promote anti-Indian terrorist activities from inside the territory, but the fact is that for all practical reasons India has to ignore attacking Pakistani Kashmir. If Indian government takes a very precise and consistent position over the issue, then the world powers would make Kashmir an overt international issue.

That is the cost that India needs to pay in order to keep Kashmir away from becoming an overt international issue. India?s options are to contain militancy inside its administered areas by any legal means and not to pursue militants hotly inside Pakistani territory. India can not compare itself with Israel as the difference between Israel and Palestine is very huge and both are very small 'countries'. And as already discussed that the Middle East dispute is discussed almost daily somewhere in the Western media.

India has superiority over Pakistan in conventional matters and no matter how many threats Pakistan issues, the fact is that Pakistan can not attack India with nuclear weapons. If somehow India is able to attack Pakistan Kashmir without wishing to control it, then it would be a big gain for India and a big jolt to militancy in the region. It is altogether a different thing that the valley people may feel more distanced with Indian authorities thereafter.

India can think about reducing its presence in the valley but it would require the intervention of high offices of federal government. Both India and Pakistan need to discuss reducing their troops along the border and LoC and inside their respective parts of Kashmir. They should agree on a ceasefire and Pakistan should put on hold all militant activities inside Indian Kashmir. Both should see how their people in respective parts of Kashmir react to the proposed reduction in military operations. Sure, situation is neither symmetric nor equal for India and Pakistan but if the US is involved then India can buy time to effectively pursue its realistic and genuine policies towards Kashmiri people, particularly towards the valley people.

The best thing for Kashmir is to talk symbiotically and realistically. The fact is that Kashmir dispute can not be resolved by arguments and counter-arguments. The resolution requires granting concessions, allowing inconsistencies and inexactness. It requires understanding others? viewpoints other than asserting self?s. The argument of waging hot wars with Pakistan and carrying out surgical strikes as Israel does towards Hamas may not be the correct and realistic approach in Kashmir. Such opinion is based on uncontested consumerism induced nationalism.

The valley?s Muslims would never abandon their dominance. If India continues the same strategy then a day will come when the Valley would abandon its relationship with the rest of India. India should be realistic in its approach towards Kashmiri people and Pakistan should understand that because of its daring actions it can not dismember India and take revenge for the creation of Bangladesh and division of Kashmir. But India should be cautious about the cost of running India and Pakistan about omnipresent and omnipotent radicalization of the country.

Why No Democrat Wants to Run Against Chris Christie in New Jersey

By most measures, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie looks unstoppable: A Republican with a sky-high approval rating in a blue state, star power and high-profile liberal-leaning backers, like?Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. And that?s left Democrats in an awkward position come November 2013.

One by one, the slate of possible Democratic contenders have bowed out. Newark Mayor Cory Booker?will pursue?an already-Democratic Senate seat. Once popular former Gov. Richard Codey, thought to be one of his party?s best shots against Christie, said last week?he?s not running for personal reasons?? which include running his funeral home business. News came this week that Senate President Steve Sweeney?will likely stick with a re-election bid to the state legislature rather than make a run for Christie?s job. And Rep. Bill Pascrell?won?t be running?for governor, either. It?s the job no one seems to want.

The last man -- or woman, rather -- standing is state Sen. Barbara Buono, once considered an outsider who has locked up the backing?of Pascrell and some powerful party chairmen. But while she now has the party?s de facto blessing, she still has quite the task ahead of her; a Quinnipiac poll released last week shows voters preferring Christie in a matchup against Buono, 63 to 22 percent.

"I?ve been jilted twice now, with Booker and Codey. Hopefully the third time?s a charm," state Sen. Raymond Lesniak told the?Star-Ledger?last week. He also said that Buono?s got some weakness against Christie: "No name identification is the biggest hurdle to overcome, and not having the financial resources to climb that mountain.?

Christie?s approval rating is up to 74 percent, according to Quinnipiac, which also found 68 percent of voters say Christie deserves to be re-elected. Christie has $2.14 million in his campaign fund, while Buono?s got $215,000. News of the Zuckerberg fundraiser prompted the Democratic Governors Association to post a petition on its site, calling for Zuckerberg to cancel the fundraiser. By the following day, it had been?taken down, while Zuckerberg hasn?t budged on his position.

To be sure, Christie is a Republican in a state where Democrats outnumber Republicans by some?700,000 voters?and President Obama won by 18 points. But Christie has deftly cast himself as a no-nonsense governor who lately has been willing to buck his national party.

Democrats aren't conceding the New Jersey governor's race, but they will need to balance the desire of scoring hits against a national figure and spending resources more wisely in the other, more-winnable gubernatorial contest this year in Virginia. There?s a general expectation among Democrats that Christie?s approval ratings, thought to have received a post-Sandy bump, will even out. Privately, Democratic operatives admit Buono is the clear underdog but also don't want to give Christie a pass. ?It?d be foolish for Republicans to somehow think this race is in the bag,? says one Democratic operative with New Jersey ties. ?Democrats in New Jersey and outside of New Jersey are pretty committed to beating Chris Christie.?

Come campaign season, Democrats will zero in on Christie?s record on issues such as guns and gay rights, as well as the economy. DGA communications director Danny Kanner says Christie?s ?record is one of failure: higher unemployment, foreclosures, and property taxes paired with gross fiscal mismanagement,? Kanner says. ?Democrats will nominate a candidate who will take the fight to Christie on job creation, middle class security, and high-quality education.?

But will Democrats, come this fall, put their money where their mouth is?? Time will tell.

SANTA MARIA, Brazil (AP) ? Penny-pinching by a band known for its onstage pyrotechnic displays may have cost more than 230 people their lives at a nightclub in southern Brazil, according to a state police inspector leading the investigation into this weekend's deadly blaze.

Inspector Marcelo Arigony told reporters at a news conference Tuesday that members of the band knowingly purchased flares meant for outdoor use because they cost a mere $1.25 a piece, compared with the $35 price tag for an indoor flare.

"The flare lit was for outdoor use only, and the people who lit them know that," said Arigony, adding that members of the group have acknowledged regularly opting for the less expensive flares. "They chose to buy those because they were cheaper than those that can be used indoors."

The repercussions of that choice continued to send shock waves through Santa Maria, a college town of 260,000 people that's been stunned by the early Sunday morning tragedy in the Kiss nightclub.

The Rio Grande do Sul state forensics department raised the death toll Tuesday from 231 to 234 to account for three victims who did not appear on the original list of the dead. Authorities say more than 120 people remain hospitalized for smoke inhalation and burns, with dozens of them in critical condition.

The blaze began at around 2:30 am local time, during a performance by Gurizada Fandangueira, a country music band that had made the use of pyrotechnics a trademark of their shows.

Police have said the club's ceiling was covered with an insulating foam made from a combustible material that appeared to have ignited after it came in contact with a spark from a flare lit during the performance.

After the fire extinguisher malfunctioned, the blaze spread throughout the packed club at lightning speed, emitting a thick, toxic smoke. Because Kiss apparently had neither an alarm nor a sprinkler system and only one working exit, the crowd was left to search desperately for a way out.

About 50 of the victims were found in the club's two bathrooms, where the blinding smoke caused them to believe the doors were exits.

Police investigator Arigony said people headed to the bathrooms because the only lights in the dark club were coming from there, and the patrons mistook them for exits. The foam, which emitted a toxic gas, was not proper soundproofing equipment and was likely only used to cut down on the echo inside the club, Arigony said.

He added that a full analysis of the foam was ongoing. The malfunctioning fire extinguisher was not legal, he said, and the club's operating license had expired in August.

"There were diverse irregularities," Arigony said. "Any child could have seen that this establishment should not have been open."

Outraged locals marched through Santa Maria Tuesday to demand justice for the dead, an unusual move in a country where public protests are rare. The demonstration interrupted the police news conference, even as Arigony pledged to investigate everyone involved in the tragedy ? including the authorities charged with making sure such establishments are up to code, such as firefighters and city officials.

The fire inspired nationwide action, and several mayors said they would crack down on nightclubs and other venues in their cities.

The government of the country's biggest city, Sao Paulo, promised tougher security regulations for nightclubs and other places where many people gather. The mayor of the city of Americana, Sao Paulo state, ordered the temporary shutdown of 10 of the city's nightclubs. Mayor Diego de Nadai suspended the operating permits of the nightclubs pending inspections into the fire and accident prevention measures in place, local media reported.

The Folha d S. Paulo newspaper reported that in Manaus, nightclubs with empty fire extinguishers and unmarked emergency exits have been shut down and fined. And in Rio de Janeiro, a consumer complaint hotline has received more than 60 calls since Sunday's tragedy denouncing hazardous conditions at night spots, theaters, supermarkets, schools, hospitals and shopping malls around the state. Blocked emergency exits and nonexistent fire alarms and extinguishers top the list of most common complaints.

G1, Globo television network's Internet portal, said police searched two other Santa Maria nightspots owned by Mauro Hoffmann, one of the partners of the Kiss nightclub, for evidence that could help shed light on the investigation.

Monday night's searches yielded no evidence, and the site reported computers that stored images recorded by the Kiss club's security cameras have not yet been found. G1 cites a police investigator as saying the owners have insisted the club's closed-circuit camera system hadn't worked in months.

Both have been provisionally detained, along with two of the band members, and a judge has frozen the assets of both of the club's owners, pending the investigation.

The fire appeared to mark a possible turning point for a country that has long turned a blind eye to safety and infrastructure concerns. The disaster, the worst fire of its kind in more than a decade, has also raised questions of whether Brazilian authorities are up to the task of ensuring safety in such venues as the country prepares to host next year's World Cup and the 2016 Olympics.

One of Brazil's biggest newspapers, O Globo, published an editorial Tuesday saying it was time for action.

"The tragedy in Santa Maria forces us to seriously reflect over our national culture of leniency, contempt and corruption," it said. "We must start from the principle that the mea culpa belongs to us all: public servants, owners of establishments that disregard safety regulations, and regular citizens who flout them."

Soccer legend Pele, too, urged the Brazilian government to "make safety and security a priority in this country."

"So many young people are no longer with us, they had entire lives ahead of them. I ask God to protect them and take care of their families," he wrote on Twitter.

According to state safety codes here, clubs should have one fire extinguisher every 1,500 square feet as well as multiple emergency exits. Limits on the number of people admitted are to be strictly respected. None of that appears to have happened at the Santa Maria nightclub.

Rodrigo Martins, a guitarist for the group playing that night, told Globo TV network in an interview Monday that the flames broke out minutes after the employment of a pyrotechnic machine that fans out colored sparks.

He added that the 615 square-meter (6,650 square-foot) club was packed with an estimated 1,200 to 1,300 people. The police have said that capacity for a club of that size is under 700 people.

"I thought I was going to die there," Martins said. "There was nothing I could do, with the fire spreading and people screaming in front."

Most of the dead were college students 18 to 21 years old, but they also included some minors. Almost all died from smoke inhalation rather than burns.

The blaze was the deadliest in Brazil since at least 1961, when a fire that swept through a circus killed 503 people in Niteroi, Rio de Janeiro.

Sunday's fire also appeared to be the worst at a nightclub anywhere in the world since December 2000, when a welding accident reportedly set off a fire at a club in Luoyang, China, killing 309 people.

Family of 14 gives up everything to live in RV

The Kellogg family in 2012. (Cody, 3 months, not pictured.)

?Every single day is a weekend."

That's how Susie Kellogg, mother of 12, describes family life these days, after she and her husband, Dan, decided to sell their Glenwood Springs, Colorado home last fall, fill up an RV with their children?all of them?and travel the country in search of adventure. Permanently.

All but one of the Kellogg children?aged 3 months to 19 years, each with names ending in a "y"?are home-, er, RV-schooled in the morning. In the afternoon, they explore: kayaking, hiking, camping?anything they want.

?This is what freedom is,? Dan Kellogg told the "Today" show. ?You go after it.?

?I want them to live life in the moment and not be living for tomorrow or ?After my kids are grown? or ?Thank God it?s Friday,?? Susie added.

The eldest child?Kerry, who graduated from high school last spring?gave up a chance to go to college, opting to join the family on the road and work on graphic design.

?[At first] I thought that going in an RV wasn?t normal and was weird,? she told the "Today" show. But "we can do anything we want now. Anything. And nothing is holding us back.?

?I am so ready for this,? Kerry told Denver's Fox 31. ?I am over Glenwood. I just want to enjoy new adventures and see new places.?

The Kelloggs have a website (KelloggShow.com), Twitter feed, Facebook page and YouTube channel to document their travels and promote their unusual way of life. They even penned a parenting guide?"Raising a Badass Family"?that Dan calls "a ramped-up, modern version of that which Dr. Spock and Dr. T. Berry Brazelton pioneered in both the 1940s and 1990s."

From the book's description on Amazon.com:

Filled with practical and compassionate advice for both new parents as well as those knee-deep in their parenting journey, it is a must read for all anxious parents, those suffering from parenting overload and those that simply need a swift kick in the pants. "Raising a Badass Family" delves deeply into the hot issues parents must face today, such as spanking, co-sleeping, daycare, homeschooling, raising teens and so much more.

It's like a real-life, supersized version of the Griswolds.

The Kellogg kids are undeniably close?both figuratively and literally?but Susie says the children are encouraged to socialize, even on the road.

"Our kids encourage each other, they coach each other, they police each other and they love each other," Susie wrote in a recent blog post. "They have built-in BFFs and they are meeting new people in every new stop?both kids and adults."

More:

This lifestyle also allows our kids to remain kids for as long as they wish. They run, climb trees, build fires, play pranks, wrestle, yell, scream, holler and laugh all day everyday. Dally summed up the enticement of RV life in one simple sentence: ?I like having my house on wheels because I can go anywhere I want without having to pack and plan.? Yes! Freedom. Freedom to do whatever we want, whenever we want! We don?t play well by other people?s rules. We don?t like to be told what we can and cannot do. This nomad life is exactly what we were born to do!

And it doesn?t hurt that sometimes we are treated like rock stars by people who recognize us from YouTube or our blog! I wouldn?t trade my life for anything in the world.

How to enable system sounds on your Android device

System sounds

Part of having a modern smartphone is the media experience. Today's Android phones rival about any desktop system when it comes to audio and visual cues for the way you interact with them. Case in point -- audible alerts for system UI actions.

Making your Android phone or tablet give you an affirming "tick" when you press a button or unlock your screen is easy. Open your settings, and fins the "Sound" entry in the menu list. You'll see something like the above, where you can set the standard ringtone and notification. If you scroll down a bit you'll see where you can enable or disable the audible prompt when doing things like dialing a number, or unlocking your phone. What's really cool is that you can set these sounds individually, so your phone only makes the noises you want it to make.

Once you have things set up the way you like, just press the back button and leave the settings menu. Now you're set!

Russian state TV presenter apologies for insulting parliament

MOSCOW (Reuters) - A presenter on Russian state-owned television has apologized for insulting parliament after lawmakers suggested they might bring in a law barring foreigners criticizing Russia on state media.

Vladimir Pozner, who holds Russian, American and French passports, angered deputies in the Duma by making a reference to "dura", which translates as "fool", while discussing a law banning Americans from adopting Russian children on his talk show in December.

Deputies responded by floating an idea to ban critical foreign passport holders from state television, which dominates the viewing figures and is seen very supportive of the Kremlin.

But in the latest edition of his Channel One show on Sunday, Pozner apologized for what he said was a slip of the tongue in saying "dura" by accident.

Deputies then said they were willing to put aside any plans for legislation over foreigners on state media - for now.

"Of course if such comments towards the higher authorities are repeated in the future, it will be impossible for us not to react," ruling United Russia party deputy Mikhail Starshinov said on Monday, according to Interfax news agency.

Since returning to the presidency in May, Vladimir Putin has enacted a string of laws that critics of the former KGB spy say are designed to stifle dissent and roll back democratic liberties, such as tightening Internet controls and raising fines for protesters.

(AP) ? Stan Musial was remembered during a funeral and memorial outside Busch Stadium on Saturday as a Hall of Famer and a St. Louis icon embraced by generations of fans who never had the privilege of watching him play.

Broadcaster Bob Costas, his voice cracking with emotion at times, pointed out during a two-hour Mass that in 92 years of life, Stan the Man never let anyone down.

Costas noted that even though Musial, who died Jan. 19, was a three-time NL MVP and seven-time batting champion, the pride of Donora, Pa., lacked a singular achievement. Joe DiMaggio had a 56-game hitting streak, Ted Williams was the last major leaguer to hit .400, and Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle soared to stardom in the New York spotlight. Musial didn't quite reach the 500-homer club ? he finished with 475 ? and played in his final World Series in 1946, "wouldn't you know it, the year before they started televising the Fall Classic!"

"What was the hook with Stan Musial other than the distinctive stance and the role of one of baseball's best hitters?" Costas said. "It seems that all Stan had going for him was more than two decades of sustained excellence as a ballplayer and more than nine decades as a thoroughly decent human being.

"Where is the single person to truthfully say a bad word about him?"

There was enough room in the large Roman Catholic church for a handful of fans. One of them wore a vintage, No. 6 Musial jersey. Another clapped softly as pallbearers carried the casket from the church to the hearse to the tune of bagpipes.

Among those in attendance were baseball Commissioner Bud Selig, former St. Louis standout Albert Pujols and Hall of Famers Bob Gibson, Lou Brock, Ozzie Smith, Bruce Sutter, Whitey Herzog and 90-year-old Red Schoendienst, who once roomed with Musial. Joe Torre, a former MVP and manager in St. Louis, and Tony La Russa, who became close with Musial during his 16 seasons managing the Cardinals, sat near the front along with current manager Mike Matheny.

Pujols, who had been on track to challenge many of Musial's franchise records before signing with the Angels 13 months ago, exchanged hugs with Fred Hanser, a member of the Cardinals ownership team, before taking his seat.

Jim Edmonds, a star center fielder for two World Series teams in the 2000s, has the same last name as one of Musial's sons-in-law. He said Musial informed him that they were distant relatives, and greeted him as "Hey, Cuz!"

"I thought he was kidding at first," Edmonds said. "That's pretty cool."

Jack Clark, a slugging first baseman for the Cardinals during the 1980s, said he perhaps respected Musial most for his decency during baseball's sometimes difficult period of integration in the 1940s and 1950s.

"Stan kind of crossed that color barrier. When people were getting on the African-American players, he stuck up for them. It was a time when you could kind of get your finger pointed at you for that stuff," Clark said. "People loved him, and he loved them right back."

Bishop Richard Stika, pastor at Musial's' church in suburban St. Louis for several years, speculated during the homily about why Musial was never ejected from a game during his career: "I think deep down, that was because he didn't want to go home and face Lil."

Musial's wife of nearly 72 years, Lillian, died last year.

Grandson Andrew Edmonds said the public Musial was no different from the private Musial, the grandpa who bought McDonalds for the family every Sunday. He recalled a fan telling him, "Your grandpa's best attribute is he made nobodies feel like somebodies."

Pallbearers included Cardinals President Bill DeWitt III, Musial grandsons Andrew Edmonds and Brian Schwarze, and the retired star's longtime business partner in Stan the Man Inc., Dick Zitzmann.

After the service, the hearse and vans filled with the Cardinals' delegation drove to Busch Stadium, where Musial's family laid flowers at the base of one of his statues ? the one that made the move across the street from the old Busch ? while being serenaded by "Take Me Out to the Ball Game." Color guards from the city's fire and police departments flanked the statue, along with more than a dozen ballpark ushers. A single Clydesdale walked slowly down the street.

Cardinals closer Jason Motte shook his head.

"This is nothing like I've ever seen," he said.

During a funeral that was almost entirely upbeat, son-in-law Martin Schwarze got the biggest laugh when he recounted a 1995 radio interview with Jack Buck during which Musial was asked how good of a hitter he'd have been had he played in the modern era. Musial, who finished with a .331 career batting average, replied he probably would have batted about .275, and Buck said "Whoa, whoa, whoa," that's way too low.

Then Musial added with a chuckle, "Hey, Jack, I'm 75!"

Thousands filed through the Cathedral Basilica at Musial's six-hour public visitation on Thursday, and hundreds more attended the service.

Hundreds more were waiting at the more prominent of the two Musial statues outside Busch Stadium, where fans have gathered since Musial died after several years of declining health. Next to the statues were flowers, balloons, teddy bears, helmets, autographed items and a homemade sign that read "Thanks for the memories. You live in our hearts, No. 6."

"He's been a hero to us for four generations," Kathy Noorman of Wentzville, Mo., said, speaking near the statue. "He was such a good man, somebody you can hold up to grandkids and your own kids as an example of who they should be."

Mark Springman, 57, of Alton, Ill., brought a bottle of champagne to the statue shrine. He saw Musial play in 1963, Stan the Man's final season, and has been a season-ticket holder for about 15 years.

"He was more than a ballplayer," Springman said. "He was the man."

Death toll from Port Said rising

Another ugly chapter in the Port Said tragedy is playing out in Egypt today with 22 killed and more than 200 injured after courts sentenced 21 to death in connection with last February?s stadium disaster.

Looking back on the week leading up to the verdict, it appeared some spark of violence was inevitable. Supporters of Cario-based club Al Ahly, who saw many of their supporters killed in the Feb. 1, 2011 tragedy, looked to judge?Sobhy Abdel Maguid?s verdict as an opportunity for justice, threatening their own reaction should judgment not be harsh enough. Fans of Port Said club Al-Masry, however, had been wary of a possibly politically motivated court placing disproportionate blame on their fans.

Violence started soon after the court?s verdict was read, with Egyptian state television reporting gunshots were heard near a Port Said prison were suspects were being detained. Tear gas was also fired in the area of supporters gathered near the facility in support of the accused.

Last February, 79 people were killed after violence at the end of an Al-Masry-Al Ahly match. A panic that started after Al-Masry fans attacked rival supporters led to over 1,000 injuries, the?casualties?caused by the post-match crush as well as weaponry Al-Masry fans had brought to the match.

Amid security concerns, the rest of the Egyptian Premier League season was subsequently cancelled. The league is scheduled to re-start play on February 2.

Today?s violence reflects Egypt?s still tenuous political state, with Al-Masry supporters having always suspected last year?s tragedy presented an opportunity for the country?s post-Honsi Mubarak government to crack down on a known liberal group. Yet had the verdicts failed to come down hard on those involved in the tragedy, the violence could have been in Cairo. Al Ahly fans would have acted against the perceived lenient sentences on a group of suspects they see as responsible for last year?s deaths. Either way, we would have seen a display of one group?s lack of faith in Egypt?s justice system.

For soccer fans, it?s another example of the game serving as a crude tool for others? politics, whether that use was intended last February or not. Regardless, after today?s verdict and violent response, the death toll from last year?s disaster is set to rise to 112, should the court?s sentences be carried out.

Spaghetti With Shrimp, Lemon & Saffron - Kalofagas - Greek Food ...

IMG_7887-001You know what?s in season in Greece right now? Big, fat juicy lemons! Last year when I traveled to Nafplio (Peloponnese) I recall seeing groves and groves of lemon trees lining the roads. It was August so they all looked like limes but I was imagining myself stopping at the side of the road and picking juicy lemons for a dish like this.

This pasta dish is ready in the time it takes to boil your pasta: the shrimp take a couple of minutes to cook, the sauce is basically olive oil, garlic, lemon zest and pasta water. The dish is subtle in flavours yet still flavourful. I?ve added Greek saffron into the dish to add a wonderful yellow colour and add another dimension to the flavour.

Saffron from Greece is an ancient spice and it is cultivated in northern Greece, the prefecture of Kozani to be precise. Greeks call Saffron ?Krokos Kozanis? and it is an appellation product protected by the European Union.

Like all quality saffron, it is pricey but a little goes a long way?a pinch of saffron threads will do. This dish offers a taste of sweet shrimp, garlic and the very best in olive oil from Greece, the bright flavour of the lemon zest and some lemon juice for balance. The chives/scallions make it savory, the saffron?s flavour subtle and there?s just enough heat to warm you.IMG_7882

Spaghetti With Shrimp, Lemon & Saffron (????????? ?? ???????, ?????? & ?????? ???????)

(serves 4)

500 gr. package of spaghetti

sea salt to taste

1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil

16-20 medium sized shrimp, peeled and deveined

12 cloves of garlic, thinly sliced

1/4 cup dry white wine

pinch of Kroko Kozani (Greek saffron)

2-3 ladles of pasta water

zest of 3 lemons

juice of 1 lemon

1/2 tsp. Boukovo (chilli flakes)

1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley

1/4 chopped fresh chives (or scallion greens)

drizzle of extra-virgin olive oil

black & white sesame seeds for garnish

  1. Place a large pot of water on your stovetop and bring to a boil, season well with water and add your pasta once boiling. Cook for 6 minutes then drain (remember to reserve some pasta water).
  2. Season your shrimp with a bit salt and pepper and toss. Now place? large skillet on your stovetop along with a bit of olive oil and heat to high. Add the shrimp nad saute each side for about 30 seconds or until just pink. Remove from the skillet and reseerve.
  3. Lower the heat to medium-low and add the remaining olive oil and add the garlic slices, saffron threads and sweat the garlic for 2-3 minutes. Add the wine and reduce for 2-3 minutes (taste to ensure the alcohol has cooked down). Turn the heat off and wait for your pasta.
  4. Once your pasta is cooked, drain and add the pasta into the sauce along with a ladle of pasta water and toss. Now add another ladle of pasta water, the shrimp, the lemon zest and toss. Add another ladle or two of pasta water (if still too dry) along with lemon juice to taste and the chopped fresh parsley and toss.
  5. Divide and plate, drizzle with extra-virgin olive oil, sprinkle some sesame seeds and some Boukovo or chilli flakes. Serve with an Argyros Estate Atlantis white.

Celebrating Family Literacy Day in B.C.

?

RICHMOND From The Little Blue Truck and The Wolfs Chicken Stew, to hot new titles such as Scaredy Squirrel and Bad Kitty Gets a Bath, childrens books are keeping young learners entertained and excited about reading all over British Columbia.

?

To help celebrate the joys and benefits of reading, this coming Sunday is Family Literacy Day in British Columbia. On behalf of Education Minister Don McRae, the official proclamation was made today at the Richmond Public Library by John Yap, Richmond-Steveston MLA and Minister of Advanced Education, Innovation and Technology.

?

In preparation for the big day, the Richmond Library has been celebrating family literacy with special events all week. Today, approximately 40 kindergarten and Grade 1 students helped open the librarys collection of 3,216 new childrens books.

?

The collection was developed in support of BCs Education Plan and the Ministrys Changing Results for Young Readers initiative, which is focused on kindergarten-to-Grade 3 students. A wide variety of books were chosen -- from classics and award winners -- to new favourites by newer authors and illustrators. All of the titles are tried and true read-along books for kids and their families, and are freely available to the community through four library branches.

?

As part of BCs Education Plan, the ministry has dedicated an additional $10.7 million to advance early reading strategies and practices for kindergarten-to-Grade 3 students. A recent international study has shown that B.C.s Grade 4 students are among the worlds top readers at their grade level and had the highest average score in Canada.

?

Family Literacy Day is the largest national family literacy initiative in Canada. Every year on Jan.?27, and during the week leading up to it -- families and communities across the country and throughout B.C. celebrate this special day at literacy-themed events co-ordinated by literacy organizations, schools, public libraries and families.

Managua makes Top 100 outsourcing destinations

As a general rule, Managua gets better looking the farther away you get. But a leading advisory firm for global outsourcing and investment says Nicaragua?s homely capital deserves a closer look.

Thanks to improved infrastructure, competitive costs, a skilled bilingual workforce and an attractive geographical location, Managua has moved its way onto Tholons? list of Top 100 Outsourcing Destinations in the world. According to the referential list, Managua ranks 95 in the world?one notch above Guatemala City, which also makes its first appearance on Tholons? 2013 index.

The BPO industry has employs nearly 5,000 Nicaraguans, according to ProNicaragua (photo/ ProNicaragua)

The only other Central American country represented on the list is Costa Rica, whose capital city ranks 15th in the world, up five spots from last year. Neither Honduras nor El Salvador?two of Nicaragua?s biggest competitors in the global outsourcing market?made Tholons? ranking.

India and the Philippines dominated the top 10 spots on the global outsourcing destination list, with Bangalore, India claiming the title as outsourcing capital of the world.

But Nicaragua is now on the map and getting its due as an up-and-comer in the industry.

??With major players such as Sitel, 24/7 Customer and Stream Global Services, Managua has nearly 4,000 FTEs (call center employees) delivering bilingual contact support services,? Tholons reports.

The challenge for the two Central American newcomers will be to keep their spots on Tholons? list by improving their perceptions abroad?something Nicaragua is already working on.

??These two new entrants (Guatemala and Nicaragua) in the Top 100 List have to be more cautious in maintaining a facilitative business environment,? Tholons warns. ?Nicaragua faces negative perceptions on its political stability, while Guatemala will need to work on improving its natural risk perceptions.?

Javier Chamorro, executive director of Nicaragua?s investment-promotion agency ProNicaragua, which is spearheading national efforts to improve the country?s image abroad, says Nicaragua is satisfied with its recognition as an emerging industry player. Nicaragua?s initial call-center growth spurt?25 companies have set up shop here and employed nearly 5,000 Nicaraguans over the past seven years?has been impressive and augurs well for the future of the business process outsourcing industry here.

?Being listed in the Top 100 Outsourcing Destinations implies that international experts in the industry recognize the country as a world-renowned destination for outsourcing, still above other countries in the region such as El Salvador and Guatemala, which started developing the sector years before Nicaragua,? Chamorro told The Nicaragua Dispatch. ??This means that the country is attracting the right attention and stands out as an emerging destination due to the excellent investment opportunities it offers to companies looking to expand their operations and increase their global competitiveness.?

Javier Chamorro, ProNicaragua

ProNicaragua?s Javier Chamorro (photo/ Tim Rogers)

And when it comes to global competitiveness, Nicaragua has several advantages of its own, Chamorro says.

?Among the country?s main competitive advantages for the sector is its strategic location, close to the largest outsourcing market in the world, the U.S.,? Chamorro says.

Plus, he adds, Nicaragua has a young and vibrant workforce that ?not only speaks good quality English, but has a cultural affinity with the market due to the ?reverse brain drain? phenomenon, which refers to people who left the country in the past and have returned to Nicaragua with English skills and market knowledge.?

The country?s ?greatest advantages,? however, are its cheap labor costs and generous tax incentives for outsourcing.

?It is because of this that Nicaragua is able to compete with the global players in the industry, as it offers lower costs with a near shore location, allowing it to provide timely services to the United States without losing valuable working hours,? Chamorro says.

Keeping the pot boiling

As Nicaragua continues to make a reputation for itself as an attractive destination for outsourcing, the country will be challenged to meet the growing demand for bilingual personnel to staff its call centers.

The government, in conjunction with the National Free Zone Commission (CNZF) and the Inter-American Development Bank, has established a special capacity-building program aimed at identifying and training a young bilingual workforce to staff the call center industry. The program, known as ?Opportunity Builder,? is scheduled to start its training program in the coming months with an initial incoming class of 600 young professionals.

ProNicaragua also continues to organized industry events to promote the country as a destination for outsourcing. Chamorro says ProNicaragua will be hosting an investment forum at the end of the year to showcase Nicaragua to leading BPO companies worldwide.

Next: Part II: Opportunity Builder recruits local talent from Nicaragua?s Pacific and Atlantic coasts to keep the call center industry growing.

Super Bowl crisis? Chicken-wings shortage looms

Chicken wing consumption is second only to Thanksgiving on Super Bowl Sunday. But this year, high feed prices have left the US with a smaller chicken crop, and therefor, fewer chicken wings available.

By Ned Smith,?Business News Daily / January 24, 2013

Garry Moore checks on young broilers at Todd Chapman's chicken farm in Clermont, Ga. Poultry farmers in Georgia are having a hard time finding chicken feed at reasonable prices. The result is a smaller US chicken crop, and fewer chicken wings for Super Bowl parties.

(AP Photo/Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Bob Andres)

It doesn't take much to start a furor with foodies, no matter how retrograde their tastes may be. Last fall, it was the pork industry crying wolf about an anticipated shortage of ham and bacon because of feed crops decimated by drought. ?This year, it's the National Chicken Council taking Mother Nature and the federal government to task for a shortfall in the production of chicken wings that will hold consumption to 1.23 billion wing segments during the 2013 Super Bowl, 12.3 million less than last year.

It's not that our appetite for these zesty, protein-rich snacks has diminished. Quite the contrary, said Bill Roenigk, chief economist and market analyst at the National Chicken Council, a Washington, D.C.-based trade group.

"Chicken companies produced about 1 percent fewer birds last year, due in large part to record high corn and feed prices," Roenigk said.? "Corn makes up more than two-thirds of chicken feed and corn prices hit an all-time high in 2012, due to two reasons:? last summer's drought and pressure from a federal government requirement that mandates 40 percent of our corn crop be turned into fuel in the form of ethanol.? Simply put, less corn equals higher feed costs, which means fewer birds produced."

And Americans are serious about their chicken wings, no more so than during Super Bowl weekend, the second-biggest eating day of the year?Thanksgiving is still tops with gourmands. ?If those 1.23 billion chicken wing segments were laid end to end, they would stretch between the San Francisco 49ers Candlestick Park and the Baltimore Ravens M&T Bank Stadium 27 times.

The vast majority of wings, especially those destined for restaurants, are disjointed, with the third joint (the thin part known as the flapper) being exported to Asian countries and the meatier first and second joints being sold in the U.S.? The wing is usually split into two parts ? or portions or segments ? known as the "drumette" and the midsection or "flat" and sold to restaurants or retail grocery outlets.?

The wholesale price of wings will be the most expensive ever during Super Bowl XLVII as demand rises and the supply shrinks.? Wings are also currently the highest-priced part of the chicken ? the wholesale price for wings is currently about $2.11 a pound in the Northeast, the highest on record at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, up 22 cents or 12 percent from a year earlier.

Deep-fried chicken wings have long been a staple of Southern cooking.? But the concept of cooking wings in peppery hot sauce was born in 1964 at the Anchor Bar in Buffalo, N.Y., when co-owner Teressa Bellissimo cooked leftover wings in hot sauce as a late-night snack for her son and his friends.? The boys liked them so much that the Bellissimos put them on the menu the next day.? Served with celery slices and blue cheese sauce, "buffalo wings" were an instant hit.

Their fame subsequently spread and included adoption by national chains. But a classy touch has largely been cast by the wayside. More and more, wing devotees' have abandoned the piquancy of blue cheese dip in favor of the anodyne neutrality of ranch dressing now favored by almost six in 10 U.S. adults. Only a third of the purist faithful remain.

Bartenders and restaurateurs quickly climbed aboard the bandwagon when they realized they could charge low prices for the relatively inexpensive protein and they discovered that beer sales would go through the roof when customers ate the wings with its spicy, salty sauce.

Thawing 'dry ice' drives groovy action on Mars

Jan. 25, 2013 ? Researchers using NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter see seasonal changes on far-northern Martian sand dunes caused by warming of a winter blanket of frozen carbon dioxide.

Earth has no naturally frozen carbon dioxide, though pieces of manufactured carbon-dioxide ice, called "dry ice," sublime directly from solid to gas on Earth, just as the vast blankets of dry ice do on Mars. A driving factor in the springtime changes where seasonal coverings of dry ice form on Mars is that thawing occurs at the underside of the ice sheet, where it is in contact with dark ground being warmed by early-spring sunshine through translucent ice. The trapped gas builds up pressure and breaks out in various ways.

Transient grooves form on dunes when gas trapped under the ice blanket finds an escape point and whooshes out, carrying out sand with it. The expelled sand forms dark fans or streaks on top of the ice layer at first, but this evidence disappears with the seasonal ice, and summer winds erase most of the grooves in the dunes before the next winter. The grooves are smaller features than the gullies that earlier research linked to carbon-dioxide sublimation on steeper dune slopes.

Similar activity has been documented and explained previously where seasonal sheets of frozen carbon dioxide form and thaw near Mars' south pole. Details of the different northern seasonal changes are newly reported in a set of three papers for the journal Icarus. A video showing some of the changes is online at http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/video/index.php?id=1184 .

The findings reinforce growing appreciation that Mars today, however different from its former self, is still a dynamic world, and however similar to Earth in some respects, displays some quite unearthly processes.

"It's an amazingly dynamic process," said Candice Hansen of the Planetary Science Institute, Tucson. She is lead author of the first of the three new reports. "We had this old paradigm that all the action on Mars was billions of years ago. Thanks to the ability to monitor changes with the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, one of the new paradigms is that Mars has many active processes today."

With three Martian years (six Earth years) of data in hand from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter's High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera, the researchers report on the sequence and variety of seasonal changes. The spring changes include outbursts of gas carrying sand, polygonal cracking of the winter ice blanketing the dunes, sandfalls down the faces of the dunes, and dark fans of sand propelled out onto the ice.

"It is a challenge to catch when and how those changes happen, they are so fast," said Ganna Portyankina of the University of Bern in Switzerland, lead author of the second report. "That's why only now we start to see the bigger picture that both hemispheres actually tell us similar stories."

The process of outrushing gas that carves grooves into the northern dunes resembles the process creating spider-shaped features in far southern Mars, as seen in an image at http://photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov/catalog/PIA12249, but the spiders have not been seen in the north. The seasonal dry-ice sheets overlie different types of terrain in the two hemispheres. In the south, diverse terrains include the flat, erodible ground where the spiders form, but in the north, a broad band of sand dunes encircles the permanent north polar ice cap.

Another difference is in brightening on parts of the ice-covered dunes. This brightening in the north results from the presence of water-ice frost, while in the south, similar brightening is caused by fresh carbon dioxide. The third paper of the Icarus set, by Antoine Pommerol of the University of Bern and co-authors, reports distribution of the water frost using the Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM). The light water frost is blown around by spring winds.

The University of Arizona, Tucson, operates the HiRISE camera, which was built by Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp., Boulder, Colo. The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, Laurel, Md., provided and operates CRISM. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, manages the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. Lockheed Martin Space Systems, Denver, built the orbiter. For more about the mission, visit: http://www.nasa.gov/mro .
