Nickelodeon launches iPad app

Viacom-owned kids network Nickelodeon is launching a branded TV Everywhere iPad app.

The Nick App will allow kids on-demand access to a range of the kids channel?s content as well as having behind the scenes information and video and associated polls and games.

A user authentication system will be used and, once verified as qualifying pay TV cusotmers, kids can watch full episodes of current Nick shows.

Nick said the app will also be used as a testing ground for new original content.

At launch the app is only available in the US and only for iPad. It will be free of charge. A preschool, Nick Jr. Version will follow later in the year.

?The Nick App creates a new platform unlike anything else available to kids today,? said Steve Youngwood, executive VP and general manager, Digital, Nickelodeon Group. ?The Nick App is the one place where kids can watch and play Nickelodeon and experience the complete fun and funny of our brand, wherever and whenever they want.?

David Price backtracks on his comments yesterday that he wouldn?t play for the Yankees because of their rule against beards:

?It probably wasn?t the best thing to say, but I didn?t mean anything by it,? Price said. ?I wasn?t looking to offend the Yankees.?It?s probably the best organization in all of sports. Not just baseball, but all of sports.?I didn?t mean anything (against) the New York Yankees. I?ve had friends on that team for multiple years.?

Hate to see a man so unprincipled that he?d throw a perfectly mediocre beard like he has under the bus like this. Shame, really.

TripAdvisor voters crown Italian beach as world's best

LONDON -- A remote beach in Sicily, Italy, was named on Thursday as the best beach in the world by a survey of travellers, while a UK beach managed to sneak into the top 10.

Rabbit Beach came top in the first annual awards for the world's best beach based on millions of reviews and ratings by international tourists on the TripAdvisor website.

Rabbit Beach, on the island of Lampedusa off the south coast of Sicily, was described as an unspoiled nature reserve that can only be accessed by boat and one of the few places in the Mediterranean where loggerhead sea turtles go to lay their eggs.

Second place went Grace Bay, Providenciales, in the Turks and Caicos, while Australia's Whitehaven Beach in the state of Queensland came third.

"Rabbit Beach's is clearly a big hit with travellers and it's easy to see why with its stunning turquoise water and white sand," said TripAdvisor spokeswoman Emma Shaw.

In recent years the southern Italian island of Lampedusa has been in the news as the landing point for tens of thousands of refugees and would-be migrants during the Arab Spring uprisings.

Thousands of migrants risking the dangerous voyage across the Mediterranean Sea in small overcrowded fishing boats died as a result of shipwreck, harsh conditions at sea or a lack of food and water, setting off a crisis that threatened to overwhelm the island.

Shaw said this award would be a boost for Sicily's tourism.

Beaches in Brazil, Spain, Puerto Rico, Bermuda and Aruba also featured in the top 10, praised for their white sands and swaying palm trees.

But one surprise in the list, coming 10th, was Rhossili Bay in Swansea, Wales, which beat beaches in Hawaii, the Caribbean and more exotic locations to make the top 10 list.

Rhossili Bay, on the Gower Peninsula, stretches for three miles (5 kms) and its vast expanse of sand backed by sand dunes and towering cliffs make it popular with surfers, paragliders and ramblers.

"We are delighted, but not surprised, that Rhossili Bay has been acknowledged ... We hope that many more visitors continue to enjoy its outstanding natural beauty," David Phillips, leader of the City and County of Swansea, said in a statement.

A spokeswoman for TripAdvisor said the best beach awards were based on the quality and quantity of traveller reviews and ratings for beaches on the website gathered over a 12-month period. Following is TripAdvisor's list of the Top 10 beaches in the world:

Mexican duo fined for obscene gestures in celebrations

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Two players have been fined in Mexico for making obscene gestures while celebrating goals they scored in first division matches at the weekend.

Panamanian Luis Tejeda of Toluca and Efrain Velarde of UNAM Pumas grabbed their genitals and shouted at the crowd as they stood facing the stands.

"Luis Carlos Tejada and Efrain Velarde are sanctioned with a fine of 2,000 days' minimum salary for making signs, gestures and showing obscene attitudes towards the public at the Azteca and (Olimpico) Universitario stadiums respectively," the Mexican league's disciplinary committee said in a statement.

The two players must therefore pay 129,000 Mexican pesos ($10,200) each given that the national minimum daily salary in the country is 64.50 pesos.

Toluca drew 2-2 away to America at the Azteca on Saturday while Pumas beat Morelia 1-0 at the Olimpico on Sunday.

UANL Tigres are top of the Clausura championship with 17 points from seven matches.

America and Atlas, who beat Monterrey 2-1, are joint second a point behind while title holders Tijuana have lost ground after two successive defeats and are fourth with 13 points.

Pumas are in mid-table with nine points and Toluca are fourth from bottom with six.

Bottom club San Luis and Morelia have appointed new coaches after sacking Eduardo Fontanes and Argentine Ruben Romano respectively on Monday.

Uruguayan Carlos Morales has taken charge of San Luis and Argentine Carlos Bustos is the new coach at Morelia, who have eight points, having played for them between 1997-99.
