A Surface Source Floating Floor may be the easier floor one will ever install in their lives. There?s no messy adhesive, no confusing tools, just a few simple ones and the plank sizes make for easy installation. Floating plank can be installed over subfloors like plywood, particle board, OSB, light weight concrete and resistant resilient floors. To begin installation, remove all mouldings, undercut door casings and sweep the floor clean. Next, choose the direction of the planks. Usually flooring will run parallel to the longest wall in the room. You also want plank widths to be balanced throughout the room so there isn?t a narrow plank against the final wall. Learn how to calculate the starting plank?s width in only a few easy steps. Once you have calculated the starting widths, you can trim the planks to the desired dimension. As you begin to lay the planks, peel back the edge of the adhesive so you can connect the next plank. Repeat this process until the first row is laid. As you lay the next rows, tear off the release paper so that each plank can connect to the adhesive. Remember this is a floating floor, so it is easy to take care of. When finished, attach the footing to the moulding, not the flooring. Removing a misplaced plank is easy. Start by cutting the corner of the damaged plank. CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) ? Evita Peron. Che Guevara ... and now, Hugo Chavez?

While Venezuela's sick president recuperates from surgery in Cuba, in Venezuela he is alive and well ? at least in spirit.

There he is gazing from huge murals lining the streets of Caracas, on T-shirts sported by his followers, on television booming "I am a nation!"

The cult of personality that Chavez long nurtured has been flourishing like never before as he confronts an increasingly difficult struggle against the mysterious cancer that afflicts him.

Leftover campaign posters from his last election in October still hang from windows and above doorways in the slums, while his supporters' devotion has intensified into a fervor that borders on deification.

One woman at a pro-government demonstration on Wednesday held a portrait photo of Chavez next to an image of Jesus. New murals showing only the president's eyes have appeared on city walls along with a new slogan, "I am Chavez."

The iconic eyes-only design sends a message that he is always watching and still with his adoring constituents. Many credit him with easing their poverty and expanding public services. To them, it does not matter that Venezuela suffers from 20 percent inflation, that the oil-producing nation is often short on cooking oil and sugar, that it has one of the world's highest murder rates, that the president will not divulge the details of his cancer.

"I am Chavez!" his supporters yell at the rallies in his honor. "We're all Chavez!" the crowds shout in unison.

Filling the void of Chavez's 6-week absence following a fourth surgery in Cuba, the government has been churning out a steady stream of emotional images, slogans and Chavez sound bites that appear poised to solidify Chavez's legacy as a messianic savior of the poor.

In newspapers, the government has been running one ad showing a photo of the president superimposed on a mosaic of smiling faces of Venezuelans: Chavez men, Chavez women and Chavez children of all ages.

Juan Pablo Lupi, a Latin American literature scholar, sees parallels with the way Evita Peron became an enduring political symbol in Argentina, and the way "Che" became a revolutionary icon after his death. In the case of Chavez, he said, "this has been very well-staged, all this process of myth-making and appealing to the feelings and religious sentiment of the people. This is something that is quasi-religious."

Lupi, a Venezuelan associate professor at the University of California Santa Barbara, said he expects Chavismo to go on without Chavez. "The myth is already there, and all this has been very, very well-crafted."

The connections between Chavez and Jesus are surfacing more often, having begun with Chavez himself praying to God on television for more time, and repeatedly kissing a crucifix.

In one television spot, a beaming Chavez hugs children while a singer croons: "Chavez is pure and noble love." And for block after block in downtown Caracas, lampposts are festooned with new banners showing a smiling, healthy Chavez with the words "We love you!"

Daisy Castillo, who studies law at a free university established by Chavez, joined Wednesday's demonstration, and says she, like many other Chavistas, is praying for the president.

"''There has never before been a president like our Comandante Chavez," she said.

There is plenty of precedent, however, for the ubiquitous presidential imagery elsewhere, with leaders such as Saddam Hussein in Iraq, Daniel Ortega in Nicaragua, the late Kim Jong Il in North Korea -- not to mention Mao Zedong and Josef Stalin.

In Venezuela, the relentless omnipresence of a missing leader is a way to reinforce his party, said Juan Carlos Bertorelli, creative director at a marketing company in Caracas that focuses on branding.

"Now that he's not here physically or in voice at this time, the people who are maintaining the structure of his party," he said, "are trying to maintain a presence that legitimizes them."

At least two students shot at Texas college

At least three people, including one suspected shooter, were shot at Lone Star College on its Houston-area campus in Texas on Tuesday, a school official said.

According to Jed Young, a spokesman for the school, the shooting began with an altercation "involving two individuals" shortly before 12:30 p.m. local time. Two people were shot in the crossfire, the spokesman said. The extent of their injuries were not immediately known. According to Houston's ABC affiliate, both of the victims?one student and one employee?have multiple gun shot wounds and are in serious condition. Both victims were conscious when they arrived at the hospital.

One of the suspected shooters was shot and taken into custody, while a second shooter fled the campus, the spokesman said. The Harris County Sheriff's Office said the situation remains "ongoing," but confirmed that a "person of interest" was detained and is in custody.

According to CNN, a fourth victim suffered a heart attack during the incident.

It's unclear if the suspected shooters were students at the school. Initial reports suggested the shooting may have escalated after a heated argument between them.

The police, added the spokesman, said that the danger on campus had been "mitigated."

An alert posted on the school's website shortly before 1 p.m. warned students to take shelter. "LSC-North Harris is locked down," the alert read. "Students, faculty and staff are advised to take immediate shelter where you are. Do not enter the campus until notified further."

Four nearby colleges were placed on precautionary lockdown.

Aerial footage showed SWAT team members evacuating students from several buildings on the campus in North Harris County as ATF, FBI and local police searched a wooded area.

In interviews with local media outlets, students described a chaotic scene. A female student told KTRK-TV she heard five shots fired in an area between the library and the cafeteria. Other students say they heard gunshots when they were in cafeteria.

"I was just sitting in my room academic building, room 163 when I heard gun shots," Twitter user @Amandaplease223 wrote. "Rapid shots. In the hallway."

The Lone Star College system has a total enrollment of more than 90,000 students across six campuses, according to its website.

The shooting comes a little more than five weeks after 26 people?including 20 children?were killed after a gunman opened fire at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., sparking a national debate on gun control.

In a statement, Texas Gov. Rick Perry's office said the governor had been briefed on the shooting, but declined further comment.

New Device May Diagnose Mesothelioma and Other Cancers Early

Although the word ?cancer? is not something that any patient wants to hear in a doctor?s office, many of these diseases are treatable. As time passes, chemotherapy and radiation therapy grow more precise in order to target only the malignant tissue while preserving the healthy cells. Doctors are refining their surgical techniques, as well.

One of the keys to determining which treatments may work best is an early diagnosis. However, when it comes to malignant mesothelioma, such an approach has proven exceedingly difficult.

At Kazan Law, we keep track of scientists? efforts to diagnose mesothelioma, lung cancer and other asbestos-related diseases early. Recently, a binational team from Japan and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) developed a device that can capture tumor cells circulating in the blood. This technology may prove to be valuable in not only diagnosing malignant conditions, but also determining whether tumor cells threaten to colonize other areas of the body.

Early detection is difficult
People usually have no indication that they may have malignant pleural mesothelioma until they develop symptoms. Experts from the American Cancer Society list these as chest pain, shortness of breath, cough, fever, fatigue or weight loss. Peritoneal mesothelioma is characterized by pain or swelling in the abdomen.

Once patients develop symptoms, doctors may use several tools to determine what is wrong. These include a recording of a patient?s history of asbestos exposure, radiological scans of physical changes and possible analysis of any abnormal fluid buildup. One of the more common tests is a biopsy, which collects a cell sample from the body for a closer examination under a microscope.

However, by the time patients develop symptoms, their conditions are likely in their advanced stages. For this reason, scientists are trying to find a way to screen for this disease early in symptom-free individuals. Efforts have included recommendations for x-rays and CT scans of the chest for people with a history of asbestos exposure, or blood tests to measure levels of substances such as osteopontin and soluble mesothelin-related peptides. However, the value of these approaches for early screening remains unclear.

New technology acts like Velcro
In order to improve the chances of early diagnosis of cancer, scientists from UCLA and the Japanese company RIKEN developed a device that allows blood to pass through it like a filter. Within the system is a molecule that attaches itself to tumor cells in a Velcro like fashion. In the laboratory, scientists can cool the molecules down, causing the tumor cells to detach for easy collection for examination.

?Until now, most devices have demonstrated the ability to capture circulating tumor cells with high efficiency. However, it is equally important to release these captured cells, to preserve and study them in order to obtain insightful information about them. This is the big difference with our device,? said Hsiao-hua Yu, who helped lead the development of the technology.

All scientific advances need volunteers
It may take a while before we start seeing devices such as the one RIKEN developed reach the clinic. Often, additional studies are needed to verify that they work. This cannot be done without the help of volunteer subjects.

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) has a handy guide for people who are interested in volunteering for clinical trials, which evaluate therapies, screening tools, diagnostic modalities, preventive medicine and other facets of cancer care. The guide lists both the potential benefits and drawback. When it comes to the former, the NCI states that subjects may help promote better treatments for future patients by teaching scientists more about cancer.

Five charged in deadly Philadelphia dungeon case

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - Five people are accused of imprisoning disabled adults in a dank Philadelphia basement to steal their Social Security checks, a scheme that led to the murders of two of the victims, a federal prosecutor said on Wednesday.

Each defendant in the so-called Philadelphia dungeon case faces life in prison, U.S. Attorney Zane David Memeger said at a press conference to unveil the 196-count indictment.

The alleged ringleader, Linda Weston, 52, also could face the death penalty because she is charged with two counts of murder in aid of racketeering, Memeger said.

The indictment said her actions - chaining captives to a furnace, putting drugs in their food to subdue them and other means - had resulted in the death of two captives.

"The conduct here is shocking," Memeger said.

The indictment accuses the basement captors of racketeering to steal disability payments from adults with the mental capacity of a 10-year-old.

Memeger said the thefts amounted to $212,000 over 10 years.

Four of the defendants, including Weston and her daughter, had been charged with state crimes stemming from the scheme. A fifth, Nicklaus Woodward, of West Palm Beach, Florida, was arrested in Florida on Wednesday, Memeger said.

It is unclear, Memeger said, whether the original four will still face state as well as federal charges.

The malnourished captives were discovered in October 2011 by a landlord during a routine check of the two-story apartment house in the working class Tacony neighborhood. Authorities said two of those held had been imprisoned for roughly 11 years.

Iris Van Herpen electrifies haute couture

PARIS (AP) ? Iris Van Herpen's electrifying haute couture show should have come with a warning sign: Danger High Voltage.

A mysterious black statue in a dimly lit Parisian salon awaited revelers Monday who suddenly gasped as this "statue" began to move; the figure was in fact a performer inside a black body stocking, standing on a Tesla coil.

Then followed one of the most unforgettable ?and frightening ? displays seen in recent couture memory: the electricity was turned on and this figure lit up like lightening.

As if straight out of a scene from the movie "X-Men," long electrical sparks shot out in all directions for several minutes.

It was a great, if extreme, introduction to the "voltage" theme of the avant-garde Dutch designer's fourth couture show for fall-winter 2013.

Van Herpen continued her signature exploration of organic life in 11 dynamic looks ? this season, through the natural electricity that, so say the program notes, "enervate the human body."

This was, as ever, twinned with a dash of poetic license, all to produce one of her strongest shows to date.

White trapezoid silhouettes with all-over spiky appliques perfectly evoked the high-energy fuzz of a voltage current.

In black, several dresses sported fine, bendy strips which pointed upward, like human hair that's exposed to static electricity.

The theme of sea creatures is recurrent in Van Herpen's artistic vocabulary ? here, seen explored in one column dress that was reminiscent of the energy-rich phosphorescence of deep-sea Medusas.

This show ? featuring some of the most imaginative clothes the Dutch wunderkind has produced ? will set her in good stead for her debut ready-to-wear show in March.

But it was the electric human that stole the show.
