Registry cleaning software like CCleaner, RegCleanXP claim to delete the junk of your Windows Registry databases. But?does that make your computer work any faster ?

One of the MVP recently wrote that Registry Cleaners are useless, as Windows XP *never* reads the whole registry, but only the necessary keys when needed. Each and every unnecessary key will just be ignored.

Another one said that some registry entries might be obsolete but are still accessed by some program and could effect the performance of that program (which could be part of the system).?

Be mindful of guests who may have food allergies during festive ...

TORONTO - When you're entertaining over the holidays, chances are there will be a guest who's at risk of having an allergic reaction to an ingredient contained in one of the dishes being served.

Common harmful ingredients can include peanuts, nuts and shellfish, which are often found in items served at cocktail or dinner parties.

Here are some tips from EpiPen to keep in mind when preparing for festive gatherings that could include family or friends at risk of anaphylaxis.

? When inviting guests, ask if they are allergic or sensitive to any foods or common allergens and keep these in mind when planning your menu.

? Prepared food often contains allergens that might not be mentioned on packaging. Shellfish and peanuts or nuts in baked goods are obvious, but consider nut extracts or that butter is made from milk. Basted or self-basting turkeys can include allergens such as soy, wheat or dairy. Opt for natural or organic turkeys which are minimally processed and do not contain allergens. Ordinary orange juice could contain animal protein because some juices are enriched with omega-3s from fish.

? Some commercial chicken bouillons contain dozens of ingredients that may contain common allergens, such as milk substances. It's best to prepare your own broth and to avoid using a chicken carcass that might contain traces of cracked eggs.

? Be aware of cross-contamination. Wash hands well, use clean aprons and towels and don't prepare allergen-free dishes near non-allergen-free dishes. Ensure work and cooking surfaces, including cutting boards, bowls, plates and cooking utensils, have been thoroughly cleaned and have not come in contact with allergens. A cutting board, even if cleaned and disinfected, can harbour traces of allergenic proteins in the knife marks.

? Keep allergen-free dishes on different tables, away from the non-allergen-free dishes, and use different serving utensils for each.

? If the event is being catered, those at risk of anaphylaxis can ask the host for the name of the caterer and call to advise them of dietary needs. Most caterers will offer alternatives.

? Those at risk could offer to bring a dish or two to share to have safe options.

The following are recipes for an entree and side dish which do not contain any of the common allergens:

Turkey Osso Buco

The restaurant Zero8 in Montreal, which is free of gluten and the top eight food allergens (dairy, egg, wheat, soy, peanuts, tree nuts, fish and shellfish), created the recipes for this entree and side dish. They're suitable for the festive season or any time of year.

Preparation Time: 25 minutes

Cooking Time: 1 1/2 hours

200 ml (2/3 cup plus 1/4 cup) olive oil

1 onion, chopped

3 celery stalks, chopped

1 garlic clove, minced

4 turkey osso buco cuts, cut about 2 cm (3/4 inch) thick (about 2 turkey breasts)

Salt and pepper, to taste

1 bay leaf

200 ml (2/3 cup plus 1/4 cup) dry white wine (see note)

500 g (1 lb) chopped peeled fresh or canned tomatoes (certified allergen-free)

2 l (8 cups) poultry bouillon (certified allergen-free)

50 ml (1/4 cup) chopped fresh parsley

10 ml (2 tsp) chopped rosemary

In a large ovenproof pot, heat half the olive oil; saute onion, celery and garlic.

Meanwhile, in a skillet, heat remaining olive oil (do not allow to smoke) and brown turkey. Season with salt and pepper.

Add turkey and bay leaf to pot. Moisten with white wine and continue heating to reduce by about half (it may have a syrupy consistency). Stir in tomatoes. Cook for 3 or 4 minutes and pour in bouillon. Season with salt and pepper. Cover and cook in a 200 C (400 F) oven for 1 1/2 hours.

Lay turkey cuts on a platter. Pour cooking juices over meat and sprinkle with chopped parsley and rosemary. Serve with rice pilaf (recipe follows).

Makes 4 servings.

Nutrition information per serving: 534 calories; 47.4 g fat (6.9 g saturated); 23.7 mg cholesterol; 10.9 g carbohydrate; 2.6 g fibre; 10.5 g protein; 1,116 mg sodium.

Tips:

? Wine may contain more than 10 mg/ml (milligrams per millilitre) of sulfites. Sulfites can cause allergic reactions, and manufacturers are required to list them on their labels. Wines generally contain between 50 and 250 mg/l of sulfites. Consequently, this recipe may not be suitable for people with sulfite hypersensitivity.

? Leftover portions can be frozen and defrosted later in the refrigerator.

Rice Pilaf

Preparation time: 10 minutes

Cooking time: 20 minutes

Inactive time: 15 minutes

375 ml (1 1/2 cups) water

50 ml (1/4 cup) olive oil, plus extra for drizzling

1 onion, finely chopped

250 g (8 oz) long-grain white rice

Salt, to taste

Bring water to a boil.

In an ovenproof pot, sweat onion in olive oil until it becomes translucent. Add unrinsed rice and saute until it begins to turn white, stirring gently. Add boiling water and salt.

Cover surface of rice mixture with parchment paper and bake in a 200 C (400 F) for 16 to 18 minutes. Remove rice from oven and let stand for 15 minutes to allow it to expand.

Fluff with a fork and drizzle with olive oil.

Makes 4 servings.

Nutrition information per serving: 356 calories; 13.9 g fat (1.9 g saturated); 0 mg cholesterol; 1.2 g fibre; 4.7 g protein; 46.8 mg sodium.

New Mexico Company Pushes for Horse Slaughter | BloodHorse.com

A New Mexico meat company that wants to resume domestic horse slaughter for food is suing the federal government, alleging inaction on its application was driven by emotional political debates and has cost it hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Valley Meat Co. is seeking to force the U.S. Department of Agriculture to resume inspections necessary to open what would be the nation's first new horse slaughterhouse in more than five years.

The company and its owner, Rick de los Santos, also accuse the organizations of defamation during a yearlong dispute that has reignited debate over the humane treatment of horses and how best to control the nation's equine population.

Perhaps the most divisive question is whether the noble, iconic animals that played a key role in the settling of much of America are livestock or pets.

The USDA declined comment this week on the pending litigation. The agency has until January to respond to the suit filed in federal court in late October. Animal Protection of New Mexico also declined comment. Humane Society officials did not return a phone call Dec. 20.

Bruce Wagman, an attorney for Front Range Equine, called the lawsuit "completely false and frivolous," and said the group did nothing wrong.

"We aren't even sure what it says," he added.

The dispute began a year ago, de los Santos said, after Congress removed what effectively had become a ban on horse slaughter in the U.S. His cattle slaughter business had dropped off as area ranchers sold their herds because of drought, so he talked to the USDA about converting his slaughterhouse to handle horses.

He said he was encouraged to do so but told he would have to stop slaughtering cattle to get the proper permits.

He said he shuttered his business and set about converting it but claims he was stonewalled as publicity about his plans reignited national debate about how to deal with a growing number of abused and abandoned horses.

His lawsuit claims evidence will show a "marked change in cooperation" by the USDA that the agency allegedly told him was politically motivated.

Meanwhile, the defamation suit alleges the animal protection groups actively tried to destroy his business.
Many animal humane groups and public officials were outraged at the idea of resuming domestic horse slaughter, including New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez, who previously vowed to fight the plan by Valley Meat Co.

"A horse's companionship is a way of life for many people across New Mexico," she said earlier this year. "We rely on them for work and bond with them through their loyalty."

Some others, however, including some horse rescues, livestock associations, and the American Quarter Horse Association, support a return to domestic horse slaughter.

They point to a 2011 report from the federal Government Accountability Office that shows horse abuse and abandonment have been increasing since Congress effectively banned horse slaughter by cutting funding for USDA inspection programs in 2006.

A bill passed last year authorized the USDA to resume horse slaughterhouse inspections, prompting the application from de los Santos.

The number of U.S. horses sent to other countries for slaughter has nearly tripled since domestic horse slaughter ceased. Most humane groups agree that some of the worst abuse occurs in the slaughter pipeline that often takes horses to inhumane facilities in Mexico.

Last year, 68,429 horses were shipped to that country and 64,652 to Canada, according to USDA statistics compiled by the Equine Welfare Alliance, a nonprofit dedicated to ending horse slaughter. That compares to total exports of 37,884 of the animals in 2006.

Dell C1760nw Color Printer

The Dell C1760nw Color Printer is a step up from the Dell C1660w Color Printer, adding Ethernet connectivity and a bypass tray, using a slightly faster print engine, and offering slightly lower running costs. It has solid (if unspectacular) speed and output quality, and is a respectable choice as a color printer for a micro or home office.

The C1760nw's print engine is LED based, using light-emitting diodes rather than lasers as its light source. LED printers, though, share many of the characteristics of lasers and are considered laser class. They tend to be smaller than true lasers, however, and the C1760nw is no exception, measuring 8.9 by 15.5 by 11.8 inches (HWD), the same size as the Dell C1660w, though at 23 pounds it's a bit over 2 pounds heavier. Still, it's easy enough to share a desk with.

The C1760nw's paper capacity is 150 sheets, plus a 10-sheet bypass tray so you can easily switch to alternate paper stock. Its paper capacity makes it best for relatively light-duty use in a micro or home office, or as a personal printer in any size office. Like the Dell C1660nw, it lacks an auto-duplexer for printing on both sides of a sheet of paper, as well as a port for a USB thumb drive.

The C1760nw is compatible with the recently introduced Dell Mobile Print for Android, and will also work with the iOS and Windows RT versions of the app when they're released in early 2013.

The C1760nw offers USB, Wi-Fi and Ethernet connectivity. I tested it over a wired network with the printer's driver installed on a PC running Windows Vista.

Printing Speed
On our business applications suite, (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing), I timed the C1760nw at an effective 4.8 pages per minute (ppm) a decent speed and good for its 15 page per minute monochrome and 12 page per minute color printing rating that is based on printing text documents without graphics or photos?our test suite includes text pages, graphics pages, and pages with mixed content. The C1760nw, rated at 12 pages per minute mono and 10 pages per minute for color printing was a trifle slower, at 4.2 ppm. The Editors' Choice Samsung CLP-415nw, which was rated at 19 ppm for both color and monochrome printing, zipped through our business suite at 6.0 ppm.

Output Quality
The C1760nw's overall output, though solid enough, was a touch below par for a color laser, with slightly below-par text, and average graphics and photo quality. Text is fine for general business use, though not for uses that require very small fonts.

With graphics, for the most part colors were bold and well saturated, but some black backgrounds appeared faded. Thin colored lines were often hard to see. Most illustrations showed dithering (graininess), and posterization (abrupt changes in color or tone where they should be gradual) was visible in a couple of images that tend to bring it out. The graphics are okay for PowerPoint presentations, though I would hesitate to hand them to people I was seeking to impress.

Photo quality is fine for in-house business use, though whether the quality is good enough for use in company newsletters depends on how picky you are. Photo prints frequently suffered from some loss in detail, particularly in bright areas.

Running Costs
The C1760nw will cost you a little more up front than the Dell C1660w, but its lower running costs (3.5 cents per monochrome page and 18.5 cents per color page, compared with 4 cents mono and 21 cents color for the Dell C1660w) will help you recoup the price difference over time. In addition, you get a faster print engine (as was borne out in our testing), Ethernet, and a 10-sheet bypass tray.

The Editors' Choice Samsung CLP-415NW has marginally higher claimed running costs, at 3.7 cents per monochrome page and 19 cents per color page. It does offer a faster print speed, plus a substantially larger paper capacity (250 sheets) and better output quality at a comparable price. Its higher paper capacity makes it appropriate for heavier-duty printing and slightly larger offices than the C1760nw. The Samsung CLP-415NW is still a good choice for micro or home offices, but it's too large to easily share a desk with. That's one area in which the Dell C1760nw Color Printer beats it hands down.
