'Boston Strangler' case: Will new DNA evidence finally bring resolution? (+video)

Boston Strangler is thought to have sexually assaulted and killed 11 women in the early 1960s. Law enforcement officials say they now have physical evidence linking Albert DeSalvo to the last killing.

For nearly two years back in the early 1960s, a man who came to be known as the ?Boston Strangler? preyed on women, sexually assaulting and killing 11 of them ? many in their homes.

The crimes were never successfully prosecuted, although Albert DeSalvo confessed to being the serial killer several years later. But Mr. DeSalvo later recanted his confession, and in 1973 he was stabbed to death at the state prison in Walpole, Mass., where he was serving a life sentence for armed robberies and sexual assault involving other victims.

Now, Massachusetts law enforcement authorities say they have enough physical evidence to link DeSalvo to the murder of 19-year-old Mary Sullivan ? the last of the Boston Strangler?s victims ? in her apartment in 1964.

DNA from the scene of Ms. Sullivan's rape and murder has produced a "familial match" with DeSalvo, Suffolk County district attorney Daniel Conley said Thursday.?The new physical evidence came from a water bottle discarded by a nephew of DeSalvo.

"There was no forensic evidence to link Albert DeSalvo to Mary Sullivan's murder until today," Mr. Conley said at a news conference. Conley said he expected investigators to find an exact match when the evidence is compared with DeSalvo?s DNA, which will be obtained when his body is exhumed.

Conley acknowledged widespread disagreement among law enforcement and researchers who have investigated the killings whether DeSalvo did in fact kill all the women, The Boston Globe reported Thursday.

?At this point in time, 50 years removed from those deaths and without the biological evidence that we have in the Sullivan case, that is a question that we cannot answer,?? Conley said. ?But these developments give us a glimmer of hope that there can be one day finality, if not accountability, for the families of the 10 other women murdered so cruelly in Boston, Cambridge, Lawrence, Lynn, and Salem.??

Unsolved for decades, the case continued to fascinate the public even though the string of killings thought to be linked to the Boston Strangler seemed to have stopped. Dozens of books were written. Actor Tony Curtis played DeSalvo and Henry Fonda the lead detective in the 1968 Hollywood version.

Celebrity attorney F. Lee Bailey, who helped to obtain the confession from DeSalvo, said Thursday's announcement will probably help put to rest speculation over the Boston?Strangler's?identity.

Mr. Bailey had been representing another inmate who informed the attorney that DeSalvo, who was already in prison for the other crimes, knew details of the crimes. Bailey went to police with the information, and he said that DeSalvo demonstrated he knew details only the killer would know.

Bailey would later represent DeSalvo.

"It was a very challenging case," said Bailey, who lives in Yarmouth, Maine. "My thought was if we can get through the legal thicket and get this guy examined by a team of the best specialists in the country, we might learn something about serial killers so we could spot them before others get killed."

If this new evidence proves conclusive, one ? and only one ? of the Boston Strangler cases will have been solved. No DNA evidence is believed to exist for the other Boston?Strangler?slayings.

Still, resolution in the haunting serial-killer case may finally be in the offing, said Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley, according to The Boston Globe.

?We may have just solved one of the nation?s most notorious serial killings,?? Ms. Coakley said.

Meanwhile, more-recent serial-killer cases ? including the Long Island case involving 10 to 14 women killed over a period of 15 years ? remain unsolved.

Microsoft sues U.S. Customs office to force Google phone ban

Here's another Microsoft-Motorola Mobility battle brewing, but we have a new party in the mix: U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

The Windows maker filed a lawsuit on Friday at the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia in Washington against the federal agency.

Notably, Microsoft also named also named Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano in the complaint.

According to reports, Microsoft filed the complaint to force U.S. Customs to follow through on a previous ban against the import of mobile phones made by Google-owned Motorola.

That ban, issued by the U.S. International Trade Commission, is supposed to be in effect through at least April 2018.

However, Microsoft is saying that Google and the U.S. Customs office colluded in secret meetings to allow imports to continue.

There are actually a number of these phone bans floating around right now.

Earlier this week, Apple pleaded to the ITC to hold off on a sales ban that would see older iPhone and iPad models pulled from shelves until a court evaluates the appeal.

That request sprouted up just over a month after the ITC issued a limited import ban on some Apple products following a ruling that the Cupertino, Calif.-based company infringed on a Samsung-owned patent,?U.S. Patent No. 7,706,348.

Apple could still be in the luck though because the final ruling could be overturned by the Federal Circuit Court or the White House.

The likely next step for the Microsoft-U.S. Customs-Google/Motorola case is appeal over the aforementioned ITC ban, scheduled for August 6.

Merion Golf Club still basking in afterglow, recuperating month after hosting 2013 U.S. Open

Matt Shaffer couldn?t get the U.S. Open off his mind before it happened.

Nearly a month after the Open finished at Merion Golf Club?s East Course in Haverford, he now knows it?s an experience he will never forget.

?Once they announced the Open (coming to Merion seven years ago), it pretty much occupies your thoughts for years,? said Shaffer, Merion?s superintendent who has worked at the club for 11 years. ?My whole premise was to have Merion gain control of the players? destiny. I felt like 6-under and below would capture that. I thought if the winning score was 6-under that we would be successful.?

The course did better than that, as Justin Rose won his first U.S. Open with a final score of 1-over par.

?Personally, I can?t come to grips that plus-1 won the tournament,? Shaffer said. ?The pressure the players are under is obviously an ally for the club, but they really struggled here.?

At 6,996 yards, Merion?s East Course is considered a short layout for PGA Tour players. Most U.S. Open courses measure in the 7,200-yard range.

?I didn?t think they would tear it up,? Shaffer said. ?You have to think your way through every hole.?

Shaffer and his crew certainly dealt with their share of pressure during the week, working from about 3 a.m. to 11 p.m. each day.

?You?re dead tired but there is so much adrenaline, there is no time to worry about how tired you are until the Monday after the tournament,? Shaffer said. ?We started preparing this prior to the (U.S.) Amateur (in 2005). So we?ve been running at breakneck speed for years. When you?re used to driving 95, what?s 120?

?But it was an enormous privilege to do this. I feel really lucky.? Continued...

And while he feels mostly recovered from the physical grind that presenting an Open championship takes, it will take much longer to return the course to its normal state.

?We opened the East course the week after the Open,? Shaffer said. ?Inside the ropes, it is really good. Outside the ropes, that?s another issue. They are still in the process of tearing things down. The rains have helped in one regard in that we seeded all of the bad areas and that helped the germination of the seed.?

While the outside the ropes area where fans stood and walked was expected to be beaten down by foot traffic, it became even worse due to the rain during the tournament, creating muddy paths.

?When you have an Amateur or Walker Cup (which Merion hosted in 2009), that is usually later in the season and the course can recover quicker then,? Shaffer said. ?Having a U.S. Open in the summer though is brutal. It?s not the most conducive time to grow grass.?

Hosting the Open helped Shaffer and his staff see where the course can improve, like addressing how water drains from the 11th green. But besides that, he said, ?... I really can?t imagine us having done anything differently.?

Few may have wanted United States Golf Association Executive Director Mike Davis to come up with different pin placements on some holes. But Shaffer said those all were carefully planned.

?Historically, when the players struggle, they have a lot of complaints,? Shaffer said. ?There were almost no complaints whatsoever. Many of them made an assumption that since the course was short and tight they could manage it.?

Shaffer said Davis made the pin placements with a smart tool that digitally reads the slopes on the greens. And he said Davis put a lot of time into figuring out where to put the pins on each day.

?With Mr. Davis, if you?re in a mind game with him, you might as well prepare yourself to lose,? Shaffer said. ?There were some complaints about the pin placements, but they have no idea how thoughtful and studious he was in setting up the course for the week.

?He spent an hour and 20 minutes on No. 10 for the championship. It?s not like he just putts the ball two or three times and says this is a good place. It?s such an education for me. Each and every time I learn more about the greens.? Continued...

What appeared to be the biggest complaint from the players concerned the distance from the driving range ? which normally serves as first hole on Merion?s West course ? to the No. 1 tee on the East course. It involved a shuttle ride.

?They are used to being able to walk over,?? Shaffer said. ?It was a different mind set for them. The USGA did such a good job of getting players there well in advance, I don?t think there was ever an issue for them feeling rushed. That was well-coordinated. But they are such routine-oriented athletes, and have such a rigid schedule, that any deviation might set them off.?

The USGA?s future schedule at Merion is unknown. That will be up to the membership and the USGA.

?It?s a real inconvenience for the membership to host an Open,? Shaffer said. ?They had three championships in seven years. They love amateur golf, so you never know what they will do.?

Whether the U.S. Open returns to Merion is a topic of much debate. There has been talk of it returning in 2030, the 100th anniversary of Bobby Jones? U.S. Amateur victory there. Shaffer said if that happens, it will be on some other superintendent?s watch ? he plans to retire in seven years.

?I?m sure they will entertain the idea of coming back,? he said of the USGA. ?I think they did much better in merchandise sales than they thought they would, and they got a tremendous amount of TV coverage.?

Shaffer?s concerns are more immediate, like making the West Course?s first hole playable again.

?We have to refurbish that whole facility there,? Shaffer said of the Open?s former driving range location. ?But it?s all good. We have a great membership, and they love golf.?

Study finds link between fish oil and higher prostate cancer risk

A new study is raising questions about omega-3 fatty acids, which are found in oily fish and fish supplements, suggesting that people with high levels of the oils in their bloods might also have a higher risk of prostate cancer.

Omega-3 fatty acids have long been hailed for their apparent ability to lower blood pressure and cholesterol and perhaps protect against heart disease. They?ve also thought to have anti-inflammatory properties that might help prevent a number of forms of cancer.

But a new study has found that that men with prostate cancer were more likely to have higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids in their blood than similar men without prostate cancer.

Of the 834 men studied, those with high levels of EPA, DPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids were at 43 per cent greater risk of prostate cancer than those with low concentrations.

Those with the very highest levels of omega-3s also were 71 per cent more likely to have aggressive, "high-grade" prostate tumours than those with lower levels.

It is unclear why high levels of omega-3 fatty acids might be linked to a higher risk of prostate cancer risk. But the authors note that this study replicates similar findings they made in 2011, in a study that found a link between high blood levels of DHA and high-grade prostate cancer.

The authors say the reasons why omega-3s might be linked to prostate cancer aren?t clear. It's possible, they say, that fatty acids convert into compounds that can damage cells and DNA, or could suppress the immune system.

But it?s important to note that the study did not show a cause-and-effect relationship between omega-3s and cancer; it only drew a link between the two. It?s thus possible that there are other factors at play that could be affecting the risk of prostate cancer, such as genetics.

As well, the study looked only at blood levels of fatty acids and did not assess the participants? diet or supplement use.

Canadian urologist Dr. Arthur Grabowski notes that the results of other studies on fish oil and prostate cancer conflict with the findings of this study.

"This is not the final word on whether omega 3 fatty acids put patients at higher risk for prostate cancer," he told CTV News.

"What I tell my patients is I recommend against taking any supplement to reduce the risk for any disease because there can often be unintended consequences to these supplements that we have not yet studied."

While Grabowski does not recommend his patients take omega-3 supplements, he does recommend they eat a healthy and balanced diet.

"Because a diet that has been shown to be healthy for your heart, in most cases, have been shown to be healthy for your prostate," he said.

The study used data from men who participated in the Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial (SELECT), a large trial that looked at test whether selenium and vitamin E, might reduce prostate cancer risk. In fact, that study showed no benefit from selenium and an increase in prostate cancers in men taking vitamin E.

The researchers narrowed in on 834 men with prostate cancers, including 156 with high-grade cancer, and compared them to 1,393 men selected randomly from the 35,500 participants in SELECT.

CSN: Are Phillies buyers or sellers at deadline?

Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. has spent the week consulting with his major-league staff and top advisers -- Pat Gillick was in town for meetings on Thursday -- as he plots strategy for the nearly three weeks that remain before the non-waiver trade deadline.

As he stood on the field during batting practice before Thursday night?s game, Amaro was neither a buyer nor a seller. He could go either way, depending on how his club plays in the 12-game stretch from Friday?s series opener against the White Sox to the July 28 series finale at Detroit.

?If tomorrow was July 31, we?d be buying,? Amaro said. ?We?re 6? out of the wild card. No one is running away with it. No one is invincible.?

Amaro straddled a similar line last July and ultimately traded away Shane Victorino and Hunter Pence.

Four days before the all-star break, the Phillies are in better shape this year than last. Last year, they were 13 games under .500, 14 back in the division and 10 back in the wild-card race at the all-star break. Entering play Thursday, they were two under .500, 7? back in the division and 6? back in the wild-card race.

?I considered us less of a contender last year,? Amaro said. ?We?re in a better spot this year.?

Even as they plot strategy for the next few weeks, Phillies officials are planning multiple scenarios based on whether they add or subtract, stay in the race or wave the white flag and plan for the future. That means communication with other teams.

?Tons of calls,? Amaro said. ?It?s all I do is take calls. Things are very active. It?s that time of year, man. Nothing different than any other July.?

There is plenty of interest in Phillies players. You know the names -- Jonathan Papelbon, Carlos Ruiz, Chase Utley, Michael Young. It?s possible that one or all could go if the Phillies sell.

Young, the Phillies? third baseman, could go either way. According to sources, the Phils have heard from a handful of teams that have interest in the versatile infielder. Some of those teams like the fact that Young can play some second base. The Toronto Blue Jays have scouted the Phillies this week. The Jays like Utley, but it?s believed his contract allows him to block a deal to Toronto. The Jays are talking about moving Brett Lawrie from third to second. That could add up to them taking a peek at Young for third base. Young, however, has a full no-trade clause and would probably only approve a deal to more of a legitimate contender. Baltimore might be an interesting fit for Young as a utility man and bat. Young has a good history with Orioles manager Buck Showalter, who values the type of winning veteran intangibles that Young can bring.

Young would be expendable because the Phillies have some options at third base, including Freddy Galvis, Kevin Frandsen and possibly Cody Asche. He?s also 36 and on an expiring contract. Amaro is reluctant to trade away young talent.

?I don?t really want to move young talent,? Amaro said. ?If we have to [make a trade] we?ll figure something out. With the way our club is and with our age -- it?s a young man?s game. We want to try to keep as many young guys as we can.?

Amaro continues to list bullpen help as the Phils? No. 1 need. He was asked how much financial flexibility he has to take on talent.

?I?m not sure,? he said. ?But my boss has always allowed the sensible thing.?

If the Phils get in the race in the second half, Amaro hopes to have Roy Halladay back in the rotation in September.

?It?s possible,? Amaro said. ?We have to see how he feels. If he?s pitching by September, I?ll be ecstatic.?

Woman back in court in cancer scam

SANDUSKY, Mich. (AP) ? A critical court hearing is resuming in a rural Michigan county where a woman is accused of faking cancer.

A Sanilac County judge must decide whether there?s enough evidence to send Sara Ylen?s (WHY?-lin) case to trial. The hearing picks up again Friday.

The last witness Tuesday was a pastor whose church held a fundraiser for Ylen last summer. He received a letter from a University of Michigan doctor confirming the Lexington woman had cancer, but investigators say it was forged.

Ylen is charged with fraud, false pretenses and using a computer to commit a crime. She received $100,000 worth of care from a hospice agency, bills that were paid by her insurer.

In Port Huron, Ylen is awaiting trial on a charge of making a false report of rape.
